Hardy thanks the novelist, Mary St. Leger Harrison (pseud. Lucas Malet) for sending "a novel which I am now glad I did not buy". He promises to send the new edition of Tess of the d'Urbervilles when it appears and briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of women in society.
